Campaign up and running
If you would like to help with the campaign (could be canvassing, leafleting or taking a window poster) then please e-mail votepaul4cowley@yahoo.co.uk or phone Dave Radford on 07985 056089.
Paul Garraway, the branch secretary of the local post workers union, is standing as a candidate for Cowley ward in the May elections. He is a member of Oxford Respect.
Policies
1. Keep the Cowley mail centre open. Save 400+ jobs. Fight for a better public postal service.
2. Keep our NHS public. No to privatised Virgin health care in Oxfordshire. Listen to the health professionals. 3. Affordable housing is a priority. Invest in council housing.
4. The cost of the war has doubled whilst council budgets are slashed and the cost of living rises. Don't let the banks squeeze the vulnerable. Scrap trident. End the war. Tax the rich and market speculators. 5. Hold Andrew Smith MP and New Labour to account for the humanitarian disasters in Iraq and Afghanistan- Send a clear message - Bring the troops home -don’t attack Iran.
6. Tell Brown- hands off our pensions, restore the link. Support union action in defence of pensions.
7. Keep the market out of education- excellent comprehensive education for all. Oppose new academies in Oxfordshire and fight for investment in local schools without strings. Local schools should not foot the bill for any overspend on Peers Academy. Fight for the best deal for Peers pupils.
8. Campaign to defend local social provision and family support. More facilities for our kids and teenagers, oppose the squeeze on council budgets. New Labour finds billions for war and Northern Rock, local services should not be cut to bail out the bankers.
9.Close Campsfield Detention Centre, fight to defend civil liberties and human rights.
10. Support the campaign for a new Trade Union Bill. We have the most restrictive trade union legislation in Europe, strong trade unions are essential for a healthy democracy and a more equal society.
11. End the low wage economy: For full workers rights for agency workers. Campaign for an Oxford living wage of at least £7 per hour. 12. Replace the condemned Cowley Community Centre with something better. We need more facilities not less. 13. Bus company profits are up massively - yet fares are up and the local service is poor! Campaign for greater regulation of the bus companies leading to a fully integrated public transport system. Re-instate regular bus service for Florence Park without use of double deckers on minor roads. 14. Waste wars- no to a polluting incinerator for Oxfordshire. Provide infrastructure that allows people to make their own decisions about re-cycling. Target the big polluters, enable rational planned solutions to the climate change threat. Support the Campaign Against Climate Change. 15. Oppose the break up of Jobcentre Plus. Private contractors like the Shaw Trust should not be given funding for placing people in jobs for just one week. This is a recipe for people being placed in inappropriate jobs so private companies can rake in a fee. As well as being a waste of public funds we are concerned that vulnerable people will be placed into unsuitable jobs. 16. Support public sector union industrial action over pay and pensions.
